I have removed old, cracked caulk on the outside of my sash windows... the caulk was around the glass panes..... when I attempted to re-caulk it looked like absolutely cr*p!! is there a trick to this??

old windows were usually set in putty around the glass, apply putty with thumb (spit on hands first ,or rub with washing up liquid)use a chissel or putty knife to flatten and remove excess appling pressure and desired angle.hope it is usefull
