Lots of salt sludge inside the box (water and salt) with salt crystals spilling out of the top of the box.

Anyone know what the problem might be or how I test if it is working once I have cleaned it up?

BTW is there any health risk if these units fail?

Besides not saying what it was, MCP250 could be anything from metal halide light to concret pulveriser.
SAlt has no health hazard except for high blood pressure, thats why the doctors say to keep it down, low salt crisps etc. What box is full of water. one box is suppossed to be, mixed with the salt, that is what softens it. Get some water hardness test strips. (google it) test water in and water out, If softer out, its working. if not its not

no risk,the salt is for hard water areas like london,and i do not envy any one who stays there since they recycle the toilet water,!!!dont believe me?check it out,have look inside your kettle,try and get a lather as you shower,then come to scotland,try same,:-)
