How can I install win XP SP2 without system crashing?

My system locks up when installing win XP SP2 at the point of creating a restore point. I have been on the phone with microsoft for 2 days and they don't even have the answers.

i wouldnt even install service pack 2 - i have had ppl bring thier computers to me because they keep getting problems and all have the same problem. ie they installed service pack2. once removed the computers were behaving perfectly.

This should not be happening during the install of SP2. It is either a 3rd party program or more offten a device driver that is doing this. The best action would to be to remove any additional devices by unpluging them from the computer (eg. Scanners, printers, any device not needed to boot and have a network connection). Also make sure that all virus scanners, or extra little applications that are running in the notification area (aka system tray/the little icons near the time). You can usually disable these by right-clicking them and selecting exit.

Let me know if this helps or not.

Try creating a Restore Point yourself. If this doesn't work you will know that it is not SP 2 itself which is the problem.

If you are using a CD from a magazine front cover try downloading SP 2 from Microsoft and use this install instead. (I had a problem with a magazine's CD. The version I downloaded worked fine.)
