WHY WON'T THE NEEDLE GO ?

THE MOTOR IS RUNNING TRYING TO MAKE THE PARTS MOVE (TAKE UP LEVER ETC) BUT SOMETHING KEEPS THE NEEDLE FROM GOING UP AND DOWN . THERE IS NO THREAD SO ITS NOT TANGLED. THE BOBBIN SEEMS TO BE IN ALIENMENT WITH THE NEEDLE. THE HAND WHEEL SPINS LIKE ITS GOING BUT ITS NOT MOVING THE ARM THAT HOLDS THE NEEDLE. MY MODEL IS THE SINGER 290

Sounds like someone filled a bobbin and did not tighten the fly wheel or something like that. Check the wheel to make sure that it is tightened and not loose. Do you have the instruction manual? There's usually a troubleshooting guide in the back.
