Is it dangerous to plaster over old phone wires?

I disconnectd the wall phone wires from the wall plate, tucked them into the wall and then spakled over the hole in my wall,. Now I wonder if these are still live or not, especially during a storm. I currently use cordless phones but I do have a land line working in another room.

Contrary to the previous answer, in order to avoid problems in the future, you need to do this properly. You must ensure that you have disconnected both ends of the cable - at the extension AND at the Master Socket. Then all you have left is a dead piece of wire.
