i have a single light switch in my room with black, red and yellow/green wires i have just fitted spotlights above my wardrobe 5 and they run to a box which then has/had a plug on it i have cut the plug off to reveal red and black wire is there any way i would be able to wire these up to my dimmer switch if so exsplain very carfully please lol

and finaly,we dont use juction boxes for lighting circuits dumbo,we use loop in loop out,either to the ceiling rose or the switch box,and that depends on the professional (that lets u out )who is doing the work,

the question i asked was very simple,you,know,like you,if he has a centre light he justs needs to wire his new lights into the ceiling rose,that was why i asked if he had loft access,but your far too thick to see it i hope the guy is still alive,all that crap you told him todo,when all he needs is to feed the cable from new lights into the ceiling rose,and connect them to the flexie cable.

one last thing el thicko,you must use choc boxes to connect trannies to any wires in loft,not connector blocks,nor did you ask him the wattage of the lights,
incase they are low voltage,coz he will have to match the wattage of the trannies to the bulbs,any spark reading your post will no doubt be laughing as hard as i did.

nor did you mention if he fitting trannies he needs to change the circuit breaker in the consumer unit from 5 amp to 10,amp,but since your a smart guy,you will know why,,wont you ?(thats if he has modern consumer unit)they even put pictures on trannies for people like you,so you dont blow yourself up,

andy your the joke you dont pinch a neutral from somewhere,you take it from the lighting circuit,and they are not called lighting sockets,they are either pendants,or batton holders,you just gave yourself away for the amatuer you are,light circuits are very easy,i would not let you put batteries in a torch,
by the way ,i run my own business,been a spark for 37 years,and by the way,trannis come marked with the 240v and the low voltage side clearly marked on them,no long or short wires,some have no wires on them at all,so andy,go back to reading books or surfing the internet,leave the electrics to the guys who are qualified.

i've just realised i forgot to mention something.
check your spot lights for voltage. i assumed they were 240 volts. theres a possibility ther low voltage.
ebay sells low voltage dimmable transformers for around 3 quid.

there should be a long wire at one side. replace the flex in the jb with that then use connector blocks to connect the other end of the transformer with the flex

SD & MM. anyone with any good eletrical knowledge would know what he was talking about. He wants his spot lights put on a switch. he wants help. he doesnt need silly men who think they know everything. theres going to be a fire? what are u going on about getting lighting sockets connected to your dimmer? depending on what system? a 13 amp fuse could cause a fire? are you for real? if you dont know what your talking about dont bother doing it at all. although it does give me a good laugh

actually forget half of the first line. start from Find a cable which goes from one light to another. I was going to show u a simpler way but u might as well do it properly. might take half hour longer but then its a good job.

i have a plan! call a sparky.... or do this.
you need to pinch a neutral from somewhere, your live is already at the switch.find a cable which goes from one light to another. make sure the flex off your spot lights can reach the junction box. cut it and strip the wires so they can contact eachother in the junction box. (jb) you will need a 20amp jb with 5 terminals. or a 30 amp jb and a connector block. get enough 1.5mm twin and earth cable to go from the jb to the light switch.

you should have 4 cut cables at the jb

the cable you cut going from light to light
are live neutral and earth so join them together in separate terminals

put the brown from the new flex with the blue from the new switch cable in its own terminal

put the blue from the new flex with the blue neutrals from the original cut cable

finally put the brown from the new switch cable with the brown lives from the cut cable.

make sure the terminals are fairly tight and secure. pull the cables to make sure.

screw the lid on and sort the loft insulation out. my worst nightmare!

once you have the cable at the new switch and stripped. connect the green yellow wire to the other.

two switches. 2 cables. couldnt be easier really.
first switch put the brown in common or c.
then blue in L2

next switch put red in common and black in L2.

hey presto

nearly forgot the earths. connect them in a terminal. terminals should be used.

Get an electrician in, Cutting the plug off, means you will need to hard wire the lights to the switch, which would need to be done via an outlet, Depending on the plug that was on, you may have been able to have a light socket fitted, to plug it into, connected to your dimmer, IF your dimmer switch can take the load, IF it cannot take the load, Fire. You are going into a very dangerous area, It is illegal to modify house wiring, except by approved contractors, For the simple reason, it can cause a fire. Get some one in, or get a new plug fitted to the unit, and plug into a socket, dont forget to put a suitable fuse in the plug top. A 13A fuse is no good for lights, you need a 3A or 5A depending on the system. Again, using a 13A fuse could cause a fire.
