This consists of a 60 watt am/fm stereo system, a dual cassette system, and a turntable. The rewind and fast forward buttons work fine. But when I press the play button, the play button spindle doesn't turn but the rubber bushing does and it "eats" the tape.

not easy to trouble shoot mechanical problem in cassette player.
you can find better and much condition player from thrift shop and pawnshop at considerably low low price. go for made in japan...i got my pioneer and sansui player from thrift shop. you must clean/dust the inside.
bring your player to a repair shop. you can still save it.
