Potterton Envoy 40 - lockout?

Could someone please suggest a remedy - I have this Envoy 40 boiler which doesn't seem to be able to fire up properly, on resetting, the boiler runs through a procedure of trying to light 3 times and then a flashing F appears, indicating 'lockout'. I don't really inderstand what that means, so could anyone help? I have just had some new radiators fitted - do you think that could have anything to do with it? Thanks in advance - Jake

F indicates Lock out which will happen after the boiler has failed to ignite 3 times.
This could be down to a number of reasons. no gas or low gas pressure, gas valve not opening allowing gas to the burner. if the above is ok then it might be the surface ignitor faulty causing burner to not light, this can be check by taking off the front cover and looking in the spy hole if it glows then this should be ok. if this is the case then its probably the flame sensor not reading the flame on ignition. failing this it could also be the burner being partly blocked with lent causing poor or no ignition and therefore in need of a good service

replacing any part on a gas appliance needs to be carried out by a gas safe registered engineer even removing one screw as this is then classed as "work" which then holds that person responsable for repairs and your not gas safe registered then your not competent to carry out these repairs as laid down in the regs.

Hi Ray

Are you still about, (I saw youve just posted this month). You seem to be the guru in this area and youre right do it yourself, I dont know if the engineers really know everything.

Ive the same problem with an Envoy 80,. Seems we have BG out several times a year.

I have the 'F' diagnostic warning and looking at the manual it suggests that the gas pressure might be low and therefore the gas supply in the boiler faulty. (Mind you my wife says the BG engineers keep saying its the flue and changing that???)

Have you still got you Envoy 80. YOu havent had a problem with gas pressure around error 'F'. It was the igniter and flame sensor.

R Layton,, you should read what I wrote, I'm not suggesting anyone interferes with the gas supply.
And no, I'm not a lawyer so I would need one, but after keeping an Envoy 80 going for 4 years I've learned a bit about it.
Thanks for your interference, if you can't write anything constructive then butt out.

Ray Milner ought to be careful dispensing advice that breaks the gas safety and installation and use regulations as laid down by the hse, good luck to ray in court when his help blows somebody up or give them co poisoning (not to worry because i bet he knows all about how to be a lawyer as well)

F is for failure to light, the main reason usually being the igniter and flame sensor, which can be replaced.
Parts can be bought from Parts Center (note the spelling, part of Plumb Center) and remember to include a combustion chamber O-ring seal.
Keep a spare of each for next time, usually 8-12 months.
Fitting details are very well explained in the maintenace manual, a copy of which should have been supplied with the boiler.
You can do this without a Corgi man because you're not touching the gas supply, it's all mechanical.
Check the fan rotates freely as well.
If you still have the boiler and want more advice call me on 01723 890556 after hours.
