have to walk to sky box to get remote to work?

Help please!! My sky remote will only work if I hold it about 2 inches from the box (bit pointless really).Husband always sorted out these things but am a widow now and a complete technophobe so can someone please help me

Could be batteries, so that would be the first step, otherwise could be the remote or even the IR reciever on the box could be faulty.
