how can i fix an USB problem?

I Does not connect to my computer, when i connect it to the USB port i get a message saying "one of the USB device connected to the computer in malfuntioned"
Sony 2GB Mp3, Mp4, Fm player. I purchased it for 2000 Indian Rupees.

Try restarting the computer with the USB drive already connected
if you have windows xp it will try to repair the damaged/ corrupted files.
Dont plug it into the computer AFTER you;ve booted up
connect t before you start.
