i can turn the know and get the machine to sew, but if i press the foot control, the balance wheel turns and nothing else happens. i am using a brother xl2012 sewing machine. it may be as simple as turning the knobs to loosen or tighten something, but i am not sure which knob, or which way, and dont want to break anything. Please help.

cant find any info on your model but you can try this,make sure the bobbin winder is off cause some models automatically disengage needle bar if winder is on.some models you have to push handwheel inwards to engage while other has a insert in handwheel that need to be pushed to one side.will still try and get some more info meanwhile happy hunting,would like to know what caused this if you do manage to find problem apart from mechanical linkage breakdown that also sometimes happen
