My thompson records ok but on playback it can stutter and freeze the picture. Even sometimes not recording the picture can stop and freeze etc

You have a problem with your antenna (aerial).

In order to deliver a good picture to a dual-tuner digital box (which is what you have) you need a good signal from the aerial signal. Which needs a good, properly aligned, outdoor aerial. (You may also need an aerial amplifier in some places.)
