saving water?

Has anyone got any tips on saving water. My water bill has doubled this year mainly i suspect on watering the garden and fountain. I'm thinking of getting an additional water butt and cutting into the downpipe from the roof which goes down into the sewer, but not sure if building regulations allow that and what problems I may face. Any advice welcomed

one thing you can do is put a brick into your toilet systern, this will reduce the amount of water that the toilet uses to flush you can put water butt onto your drain pipe from gutters u dont need building regs to do it
