How can I fix the reverse stitch on my Singer 4235?

The machine has not been used recently and I was only able to sew forward. I pressed and wiggled the reverse button a few times and now it is stuck in reverse. Any ideas? This is a Singer Model 4235.

sound like this machine need a good service,using a good penetrating oil give it a good dose around area of reverse section and move lever again if that does not help you gonna have to open up,very basic system if you little technical
