Hi Stella,

From what you have written, it would appear that the carriage is not positioned properly on the needle bed.
Remove the sinker plate from the carriage and take the carriage off the machine.
Now slide it on from one side making sure the metal at the back fits under the bar at the back of the needle bed and the front of the carriage locks on to the lip at the front of the needle bed. You should not be able to lift the front of the carriage if it is fitted properly.
Now replace the sinker plate, matching up the holes with the little lugs on the carriage and tighten the thumb screws.
Everything should now be level with the needle bed and should work smoothly.
It may also be a good idea to check your sponge bar as the foam might need replacing.
Kind regards,
