Hotpoint Aquarius WMF760 cuts all power in the house - why?

We have had our Hotpoint Aquarius WMF760 washing machine for just over 2 years and it's been fine.
Today however, on the 1600 spin speed it cut all the power in the house (apart from lights) so the only way to get back on again was to flick the main switchboard on again. It started spinning again then after a minute, the same thing happened.

What could this problem be? How do we fix it?

Thanks

check motor and heater insulation to earth

A circuit breaker might have tripped because the total current (washer on spin and other appliances combined) exceeded the rating of the breaker (MCB).

But more probably...

An earth leakage (safety) breaker may have tripped because of an insulation fault in the machine when spinning.

Much will depend on which particular switch you had to operate to restore the power.

It would do you no harm to have the machine's motor checked over - prevention being better (cheaper) than cure.

Good luck...
