Can I wire two lamps to a single ceiling socket?

My roommate just bought two (hanging-style) ceiling lamps and asked me to wire them in the kitchen. Thing is, we have a single ceiling socket hooked up to a dimmer switch. Can I take these two lamps and wire them together in that socket without setting the whole place ablaze? Or should I be using two different sockets for this? Help! Thanks!
