you cant connect straight to mains needs a module to run, The only test you can do is an electrical resistance test, most motors will give continuity on 2 terminals for the armature, 2 or 3 terminals for the field winding, the above will be low resistance 1 to 3 ohms usually, and 2 terminals for the tacho coil of a higher resistance. If you have a more modern motor it will be a 3 phase wind. Basically your motor will be duff if you have a terminal that has no continuity to anything else but then it could just be the brushes worn out on the first type of motor . Cheers
