What dvd discs to use for recording?

What dvd discs to use for recording on my
Panasonic DMR-EZ47VEB, I have tried TDK
DVD-RW Data/Video, and DVD -RW Rewriteable, but to no avail, "No Disk" is shown. Have tried formatting before, but not allowed to as they are not suitable discs ?? Any help would be appreciated.
