Sometimes the light does not come on and the kettle does not heat up. This is temporarily fixed by a very light tap to the side of the switch. Suggesting that the connection inside is not secure.
I'd like to get inside and correct this.

For the sake of safety they do not make small appliances like kettles and irons easy to dismantle - you may have to destroy the kettle to get to the switch. But....

Check out the base of it - if you see any screws - undo them and see what emerges.
