t/bird outlook emails -set up? + GMAIL?

have used it for years -2 sep. accounts -my wife and me
tried to set up new account
accepts password and username for IMAP -but not POP3 set up -keeps saying not valid
also-
GMAIL
we use gmail - but one account now keeps deleting messages -and most messages now go into 'all mail'
and they all look 'read' - like when you click on then - they remain 'darkened'

don't want to use another email -as had this one for years
WHATS HAPPENNING
ANGRY, July 2016

in gmail -had to allow 'less secure apps'
that allowed me to set up accounts in t/b outlook using pop3 --leaving mail on server
imap set up was the problem
all is as was before

On a given account, you use the IMAP or the POP protol, never both.
If it works correctly with IMAP, you don't need POP.
If you ever want to access your account with more than a single device, you need to use IMAP, not POP.

For Gmail, take a look at your filters. Maybe they are set to mark all messages as read.
In Parameters, the gear icon, select "Transfer and POP/IMAP".
If you use POP:
Look at item 2. It set what is done to the transferred messaged. The first option is probably the one you want to use.
