how do I disassemble the case to replace power cord

First, look up the diagram as Sears PartsDirect - there are four screws (2 are labeled #16 on the diagram).

Pull off the bag/accessories cover (#36) by lifting it completely out of the hinge to get to the first two.

Pull off the power switch/cord return pedal (I stuck a screwdriver underneath it from the back and pried up) and you'll find the other two.

Hi Mary. I have a Kenmore Progressive Model 116.305... etc. My guess is that its a very similar if not exactly the same construction. To get to the power cord on my vacuum, I removed the large single screw in the middle of the back of the upright part of the vacuum. The entire top of the handle then slid off directly backwards with a little force applied. Hope that helps.
