I have a time laptop and the screen only works when you shut the lid to nearly closed, otherwise there are just lots of thin lines going down all diffefent colours and a feint image of what is supposed to be there frozen into background, it works fine when connnected to my lcd tv?

You need to find a way of getting at the motherboard/display adapter to screen connector (usually a ribbon cable because it sounds like it is loose.
