so many answers for a very basic plumbing question.
run hot water in sink upstairs, whilst running go upstairs, hold ball valve up in mail water tank, see if noise stops, if yes see if problem reoccurs try same process again, if yes then talk to plumber. chances are this shall fix it.

sentinal do a good one, find a lot getting fitted with new combis. you can fit it just after your stopcock, change the cartridge every 12 months only the size of an oil filter

i bought some special magnets from ebay awhile ago that goes around the cold water pipes. but the bottom of the kettle still fills up with limescale, dont think they are working.what are cyrstal ones?

paul, January 2007
you can fit a mains water filter. not the electric ones. crystal ones are the best

hi-spec, January 2007
west yorkshire, castleford

paul, January 2007
where are u in the country

hi-spec, January 2007
funny you should mention limescale we always have alot of build of the stuff around taps and the shower head

paul, January 2007
depends you can change the rubber in side they go hard that y it vibrating if its all limescaled up its not worth mucking about with. i always fit new ones. parts about £7.00 another 7 yrs service job done.

hi-spec, January 2007
what part needs replacing all of it?

paul, January 2007
new pt2 ball valve in your loft tank.

hi-spec plumbing, January 2007
that is right

paul, January 2007
right so you have tap on noise is there. soon as you hold ball valve up tap still running but no noise.. am i right. ?

hi-spec, January 2007
the noise goes.....so what would you advise..please

paul, January 2007
yes because you say it gos when cold taps on well your takeing the pressure of the ball valve the more cold taps u have on

hi-spec, January 2007
hold on a mo....i will check

paul, January 2007
i dont know.. not 2 good with plumbing.do you think this could be a possible cause?

paul, January 2007
leave hot tap running and hold up ball valve in loft tank

hi-spec, January 2007
you sure its not comming from your ball valve in the loft tank

hi-spec, January 2007
yes it sounded like the bottom and thats where the pipe goes in.

paul, January 2007
is that the bottom of cylinder

hi-spec, January 2007
the noise starts after about 2 minutes of running the hot water.
I have checked the pipes in the cylinder cupboard and it feels like one of the cold pipes running into the cylinder. maybe from the loft? i turned the tap off then the noise stopped. it started up again and i could hear the water in the cylinder filling up.

paul, January 2007
i have not tried holding the pipes to trace the noise but i will do so....cover your ears..

paul, January 2007
our house is only 7 years old and this started about 6 months ago.

paul, January 2007
have you tryed holding any pipes down while tap is running to get more of an idear where it is or if it stops slightly.

hi-spec, January 2007
by rights it shouldn't be getting air in. but not knowing how they have constructed your pipework ie bodged it soon as you get it out more is comming in. i could understand if it was your mains cold vibrating due to pressure. but your hot is only under gravity pressure.

hi-spec, January 2007
sure you are asked this all the time how can i try and clear the air out from the pipes 2 see if this is the problem.. thanks.

paul, January 2007
yoabove 60c it can't grow , you don't want to catch that......

hi-spec, January 2007
not being able to see your pipe work, i can only put it down to air in pipes and your pipes to bathroom badly secured, so when water running they are vibrating through the whole house.

hi-spec, January 2007
hmmm i thought i was saving money turning it down....oppsss..

paul, January 2007
it should be set at 60 / 65 c , because stored water below 60c
is a breeding ground for legionnaires disease.

hi-spec, January 2007
The thermostat on the cylinder tank is set at 50 but the water doesnt feel that hot now you come 2 mention it..

paul, January 2007
have you a stat on the side of your cylinder about 1/3rd from bottom ? if so whats the temp arrow pointing to ?

hi-spec, January 2007
hmmm, any ideas of things i can check?

paul, January 2007
how hot is your hot water.

hi-spec, January 2007
it don't make sense cause your hot is on different circult to your cold . strange one.

hi-spec, January 2007
it happens with all the Hot water taps and shower(upstairs only).the cold water taps and toilets are not affected

paul, January 2007
is it only one tap or sink/bath

hi-spec, January 2007
Yes a plastic tank in the loft and a cylinder in the cupboard..

paul, January 2007
do you have a coper cylinder in a cupboard, plastic tanks in loft

hi-spec plumbing, January 2007
This may sound stupid but how do i tell ?

paul, January 2007
