Brother Fax 920 - thinks an external phone in use?

The Brother Fax 920 is displaying "ext-tel in use' even though no other phone is connected. i have tried connecting another phone to try and close out the line to no avail. I have no access to the menu, however, if I know a fax is coming in I can receive it even though the fax itself does not ring. Anyone any ideas how to fix?
