Simpson 165 is putting soft brown mould on clothes?

My Simpson 165 (that I recently inherited) is putting brown gooey spots on clothes. This appears to be grime / mould build up from within the machine. I have not pulled the machine apart to conduct an internal clean (if I have to - how do I do this?).
How can I get rid of these spot deposits on clothes?

I had a similar problem with my machine and was told by the service dept. that it was a build-up from fabric softener.  It also had an unpleasant smell.  I cleaned the machine thoroughly and scaped out the buildup which was inside the container where I added the conditioner at the start of each wash.  I don't use conditioner anymore and the problem hasn't recurred.
