How can I fix my diplomat dishwasher?

The top spray arm on my Diplomat dishwasher is not rotating. Any clues as to why this might be? As far as I can tell water is spraying from the bottom arm but not the top one. Consequently dishes on the top rack remain dirty. The arm rotates freely when you push it but I don't think there is any water flow. Is there a failed pump? or is it most likely to be a blockage.
Any ideas gratefully received - needless to say I am utterly ignorant of the inner workings of a dishwasher.

Thanks for that Mike, the spray arm was OK but I checked that pipe from the filter and with the aid of a bent wire pulled out a load of thick black gunge which must have been causing the blockage. Works fine now but I'm not sure why there was such a build up - I'll keep an eye on it. Many thanks for your input

The small spray apertures in the top spray arm can get blocked with small particles that get through the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher. Make sure that the arm is totall clean.
If this fails to sort the problem then it may be a partial blockage of the pipe from the filter but this is unlikely unless the filter has not been used properly or the filter looks clean but may be blocked.
