I am trying to remove the two pipes from the flow switch so I can change the diaphragm, i removed the two R clips, but I cannot get the pipes out. do just pull out or do i have to do something to the housing around the pipe?

rockydino, March 2016
No brner light on water and heating light coming on but not firing up any ideas please

Jannine, December 2015
Thanks to DaveyM69 and others for the advice which has been great.

I have just changed the diaphragm following the adivce, including using vaseline on the 2 HW inputs to the diaphragm housing - went in easily although a bit awkward to get out.

Plumber told me I needed a new bioler and then if not to fix would cost £400.

Total cost to me was £2.60 for the new diaphragm from ebay and half hours work!

Plumbers are worse than car mechanics for ripping off.

Many Thanks

My problem is that we get hot water, but once only! Then nothing until the boiler rests for a while. Would this still be the diaphram?

Steve, August 2014
Hi Folks,

I had to use pliers to get the 2 pipes out, opened up the flow switch cleaned out the limescale and hot water works fine again :)

Shut all valves off under the boiler, pulled out the fuse, undone the 2 screws to drop the front down, undone the 2 screws to release the housing, popped out the pipes changed the diaphram..(old one had a small split) bit of vasaline on the pipes, straight back in, all screws done up open the valves pop in the fuse and ............hot water!!! 25 mins job, thought i was going to get water everywhere and have loads of bits that wouldn't go back together, but no piece of cake thanks again

Have an Ace High which wasn't producing hot water. Bought the diaphragm from EBay and chained that. Still not hot water.
I found the pin which operates the microswitch has been leaking and corroded the securing clip allowing the microswitch to move.
Need to order a repair kit and a new clip. Temporary repair carried out with a circlip till the new parts arrive.

Hi I have a Halstead Ace boiler 4733315 and it is dripping. The boiller is still providing heat but no hot water. Please help me xx

Nikki, January 2012
my ace boiler, is working the heating, but i dont have any hot water at all. my brother in law, has changed the diaphram and flo-pump, and i still dont have hot water.

he has checked everything mechanically, and now wonders whether it is the power board?

has anyone else any suggestion????????????

L.york, November 2011
Just did it successfully, thanks a bunch for all the advice. This was my first time and I have some extra tips:

- no need to bleed the radiators, just the taps.
- also turn off the gas to be safe.
- the pipes can be a b*tch to get out - I had to really wrench them before they popped. They were even harder to get in, in fact I just couldn't do one of them, even with lots of improvised leveraging with wrenches etc. Turns out a tiny amount of grease on the end of it (just a thin film) was all it needed, after that I could push it in easily by hand! And should make it easier to undo next time.

mp, November 2011
Like most people, £4.25 off ebay and fit it yourself, medium screwdriver and a bit of patience, took approx 30 mins because of pipes being hard to get out !!!

james, September 2011
I just want to thank davym69 for his invaluable help with my Halstead Ace High. The diaphram only cost me £4.30 and the hot water works perfectly, cheers mate.

Chris Taylor, August 2011
We followed the suggestion to replace the diaphragm - took about 45 mins. The diaphragm did have two holes in it. Struggled a bit pulling the pipes out and putting them back.

Alas, the hot water issue is not fixed. We still need to turn two taps on to give enough water volume/pressure to make the boiler fire up. Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

Blackburn4, April 2011
After being quoted £250 to repair this on my boiler my husband and I followed the instructions from DaveyM69 and others and have succesfully fixed our problem of no hot water temporarily with a puncture repair kit costing £1.20 while we wait on the new diaphram which cost £4.25 being received from ebay. Thanks Guys.

HezDee, April 2011
hi, took the advice from all of you, bought a ariston diaphragm and fitted it myself. bingo, working perfectly now and cost £8 . 00 thanks lads.

fred, March 2011
Thanks to this thread I now have hot water from my Halstead Ace High! Cheers everyone :thumbsup

Procedure:
Turn off power to boiler and water at main stop tap.
Drain hot and cold water by opening all taps. Drain CH system (I just removed the bleed screw from the lowest radiator in the house).
Remove top screw to release front cover.
Remove top left and right screws on control panel and drop down.
Remove two brass screws that hold the disc shaped housing (the diapragm is inside this).
Snip the two zip ties (if they're there) that retain the clips over the the pipes entering the housing underneath.
Remove the two clips and then the pipes.
Remove housing.
Remove 6 screws on housing and separate two halves of housing.
Replace diaphragm (and valve if included using spanner).
Reverse the procedure applying a little grease if needed to the two pipes to make it easier to get them in.

Dead easy, took 10 minutes. Cost £18 from local shop (genuine part!) but available on Ebay for around £4.50.

Parts/tools required:
New Diaphragm
Phillips screwdriver
Large(ish, I used 6mm) slotted screwdriver
10mm spanner if replacing valve
Tiny amount of grease (if needed)

thank you everyone especially MightyFineArt
, i have just saved myself £1500 fr a new boiler, and all i needed was The diaphragm washer, cost £7.35 from plumb center on stoneferry road hull.
the gas fitter has been out to my halstead ace 8 times since last year , total spent was £300 and he still didnt solve the problem, after coming on here its all sorted in 1/2 hour. when fitting the new one the last screw which is behind the boiler is a bit hard to get too, so take the bottom off, i also removed the front panel to make access easier, i,m no expert but if i can do it so can you, any problems let me know and i,ll help you, thanks once again.

eyezwideopen, February 2011
I fixed my Halstead ace high boiler with no hot water, it is so simple to do. Take off front cover and turn off power, undo to screws to lower front flap to acces internal workings. the lower whitish micro switch is the hot water one, remove switch by removing black clip. turn on power and insert a small screwdriver to operate switch if burner works the its either a new switch or i took apart switch and glued a piece of plastic to the underside of metal bar. re asemble and mine works a treat now....

paul., February 2011
The info below was excellent and I have hot water again after changing the diaphragm in the flow switch, a 10 minute job. Just extra tip search for 'halstead 840505' on ebay and you can get replacement diaphragm for approx £4.

Adam, January 2011
To all.The replacement diaphragm valve for a halstead ace high or gold combi is very expensive as you get washer and valve in kit. The diaphragm washer for a biasi boiler is exactly the same but does not come withvalve therefor much cheaper.(a good heating spar es firm should tell you this )

YEASTY1, January 2011
I have a Halstead Ace High boiler which is not emitting hot water from the taps unless the burner is on for the CH, if the burner is not on then it does not fire up automatically when I turn on hot taps etc.
But, with ideas from this handdy forum, I did change the diaphram.... hot water is back , thanks to all.

Maher, January 2011
Hello
I just thought I would add a quick note to say thank you very much to all the people who have given advice on this forum ref the CH working but no hot water problem. I have changed the diaphram as instructed and low and behold hot water. The old diaphram had a small split in the edge. I dread to think how much it would have cost to get a plumber in but a new diaphram cost me £37.25 from Plumb base and the job was done within half an hour. I am a competent DIYer but by no means an expert

PaulW, December 2010
i have recently had my boiler replaired after it was showing error 1.no hw or ch for a full week! but now is working fine but it is leaking hot water, i have been told it is the pressure, when the ch is on pressure gauge goes upto 3 is this normal and how do i release the pressure??
any help would greatly be appreciated and save me paying our further to call out an engineer

Hello All - This thread is most interesting to me as I have a Halstead Ace High boiler which is not emitting hot water from the taps unless the burner is on for the CH, if the burner is not on then it does not fire up automatically when I turn on hot taps etc. It has been recently suggested to me that it could be a water diaphram so I am reading with much interest those who sound much like myself, not being paticularly clued up on these things have managed to sort this problem themselves - Also the boiler unit keeps locking out and going off regularly and I have to keep constantly re-setting it in an effort to keep it on - I would be so so grateful if anyone is able to point me in the right direction as to how to approach this job as I am now very cold!!!! Whilst I don't want to mess with anything above and outside of my knowledge I am farily practical with most things and I'm willing to have a go! - Tahnks in advance for any comments receievd

kowalski808, November 2010
I blead my radiators earlier this week and topped the pressure back upto 1.5 (as recommended by a plumber). But now the bolier will not fire up. when i click heating or water on i get 3 red lights over burner on, lock out and hot water. what can i do?

The website for the manual does not work anylonger; anyone know somewhere else to see the manual to fix the problem?

Cecilie, October 2010
Just to say thank you SO much for the answers and tips.
Really helped too prevent a massive repair bill.
And again THANKS!!!

What a great place this is. After finding this forum and following the instructions to replace the flow switch diaphragm with the cheaper Ariston one, my boiler is working like a dream. Total outlay? £11.95 inclusive of VAT and courier for the part. I had initially called out an engineer who reckoned he was going to have to replace the whole unit and had provisionally quoted me £300 although he suggested we ought to be looking at getting a new boiler! Anyway Thanks everyone who contributed to this question, you can read my blog at http://peter-williams-art.blogspot.com/2010/04/another-day-in-life.html for the full story of my boiler problems.

MightyFineArt, May 2010
Adam thanks for that mate i followed exactly what you said after reading and hey presto! piping hot water!!. i have never touched a boiler in my life or anything else for that matter. strutting round like king dingaling here haha. seriously though cheers to everyone who put there wisdom on here and for saving me a hefty plumbers bill.

If you've got no hot water from a Halstead Ace High but the central heating's still working it's worth checking Adam Thwaites post. My hot water first started to go a bit hit and miss. If the taps were turned on full blast hot water would come through, but eventually it went completely. I replaced the diaphram (which had split) in the flow switch as per Adam's instructions and it's now working fine. Also note Johnny Ram's post and use the cheaper Ariston 571446 part. Thanks Adam & Johnny!

Mark, April 2010
my boiler has had both thermisters changed the heat exchanger and the pcb it works fine on ch but when i run the kitchen tap only on hot it does not go back into ch mode properly it trips out and the heating led flashes it works fine other wise

barry, February 2010
If the DHW is fluctuating in temp causing the bolier to shut off and then switch back on chances are your plate heat exchanger is clogged up with debris and limescale - I found it easy to drop the thing out ( having shut of the water obviously) and used some descaler and a good shake to clear it out - worked lovely afterwards - well at least until yesterday when I think the diaphagm split - am investigating further!

Tim J, January 2010
how old is my halstead ace high boiler and will warm front change it for a better one

willie, January 2010
Thanks to Baz and Johnny!!!!! just fixed my luke warm water problem with the cheaper Ariston part which works perfectly and best of all its New Years eve !!!! could have been a nightmare anyway I'm off to turn the tap on and watch boiling hot water come out its brilliant!!

Nick, December 2009
how do i change the diverter valve or can i just change the diagraphams

baz, December 2009
Anyone having problems with their Halstead High Ace / Wickes Combi not heating up domestic hot water, Don't be tempted to but the Halstead branded parts. The Halstead diaphragm, part number 840505 was quoted at my merchant as £25.00 plus VAT. The identical same part but branded Ariston, part number 571446 was pennies over £5.00 inc VAT...

See Adam Thwaites answer dated June 2009 for details of how to fit it.

Johnny Ram, August 2009
No hot water:
Download the manual from the Halstead Website (http://www.hgdheating.co.uk/library.aspx), look at page 29. There is a diaphram inside the flow switch which has probably split. 9.14 in the manual talls you how to get inside the switch body. The diaphram should cost you about £2 and should be stocked at any heating system repair shop. Make sure you've unplugged the boiler and turned off the cold in. Any further problems Halstead techincal support are prety handy, 0844 3711111 (option 1-2-3)

Adam Thwaites, June 2009
my halstead highis not showing any lights on front i replaced pcb, fuse, topped up pressure and vented no luck although it will fire up for two mins now and then ?

adam, April 2009
overflow is running hot/ water pressure up to 2.5 3.00

sam, March 2009
No Hot water but CH working alright.
Happened over Christmas - NO HOT WATER to wash up!!!! Seemed that it is a common fault with these boilers - The Flow / Pressure switch diaphragm develops a split and therefore not enough pressure to switch the DHW flowswitch (Pink wires) The pin moves but not enough. Instructions to replace are in the Installation / Service manual (download from Halstead) and is very easy. I managed to 'patch' the split diaphragm with a bycicle puncture repair kit until the new one arrived - worked a treat although it meant I had to do the washing up!!. Just one tip - Isolate the CH in and out and drain the water left in the boiler by pressing the Pressure relief valve and isolate the HOT water out. You don't get as wet this way (the voice of bitter experience). It is easier to remove the control panel and the bottom metal tray BUT take care you don't strain the wires especially the CH thermistor one. And of course SWITCH OFF AT THE MAINS BEFORE STARTING.

Re Halstead Ace boiler problem.
I have a problem - the boiler keeps loosing pressure - I boost / top up the water tank to geta pressure between 2 and 2.5 and within 3 to 4 hours the pressure is back down below 1.

there doesn't appear to be any leaks in the boiler or system.

Any advice would be greatly received.

Peter (not a plumber), November 2008
My boiler had the same problem and the diaphram needed replacing this was done and hey presto hot water ..... but ever since when the hot water comes it heats up if the tap is on and then when the water gets hot it will shut down for about 20 secs then fire up again ? and it will do this for as long as the hot tap is on .... but the water does go cold when it is off ..... help ?

Stitch, February 2008
I had the same problem it was the diaphram with a hole in it changed valve with valve kit and it has been fine ever since

...forgot to mention in previous post, that same happened last year and when plumber showed up, it started working (of course!). He did not do anything to the boiler - it just started working and continued to do so until just this week. (By the way, I already had to replace the computer module two years ago when it kept clicking the boiler completely off...could hear the relays switching then).

My Halstead Ace High also runs fine for heating but the hot water runs "warmish-coolish" as my son says. Tried twiddling the knobs on front to no avail (reset / power cycle / temp to min then max).

change diverter valve the piston is not pushing up onto the micro switch

Same thing hapened to me it turned out that a diaphram in the diverter valve had a hole in it and so it needed replacing.
