rca ejr338 wr sound distortion?

I have an old RCA tv model # EJR338 WR. The sound comes out very distorted (like the volume is cranked on a stereo using small speakers) whether using cable or vcr programs . I have tried switching the speaker but still have the same distortion. I would like to know if there is a simple repair, as the picture is great and I'd hate to discard it just yet.

No it does not have an earphone jack. I have tried cleaning the volume control pot. but that didn't help.

Does it have a headphone socket?
If it does, is it also distorted through headphones?
