kenmore series 90 washer won't spin or agitate?

Kenmore Series 90 washing machine, Model #110 20902 990, Series CK 1763321, type 111. My washer won't spin or agitate. It will fill with water and drain. When in the agitate or drain mode, it makes a loud screeching noise but won't otherwise move. I called sears for repair..they will charge me $49 to come to my home plus parts and labor. I need to try to fix it if I can. Thank you for any help. Lee

I have the same problem and pulled the agitator. There are two tear drop shaped plastic parts that set on either side of the shaft. The tear drops have grooves in them that work with the spline on the shaft. This acts like a rachet that allows the agitator to turn in one direction. You'll note that the grooves are worn out and allow the agitator to free spin or occasionally catch. I used a hack saw blade to re-groove the parts which gave me about another 2 months of use and time to by the parts from sears.

I currently have the same problem on the same series Kenmore Washer. I found out that it is known part that fails that causes this, that is a pretty simple repair. The motor coupling has probably failed. This is a coupling that goes between the transmission and the motor. You can buy them on line from Sears for $15 or at repair shops for between $19 and $25. If you go to these websites it will show you how to change http://www.applianceaid.com/procedures.html#coupling. The part number you will probably be looking for is: 285753A . Check out the how to remove your cabinet and to remove and replace the motor coupling. Should be a fairly easy task, if you have easy access to the machine. Hope this helps...
