hi there
i got the same problem with an aspire 1520.i tried removing and playing with the memory , got other memory, but the problem stays.

could it be the slot then..?i even tried running a live cd , but that wouldn't help, i couldn't trick it .

is there any way to check the slot itself..?

can you response to my mail..?> nadirmh@gmail.com..

thanks

first i would check the RAM, that's easy to check and a failing RAM has symptoms just like you described. If it has two RAMs, take one out (at a time) and try starting, or if it has only one, reseat it, i.e. take it out and put it back in, or put it into the other slot. The problem might be either one of the RAM modules or one of the slots.
