There's a black square on my Toshiba 19" color television?

I have a 19" color Toshiba tv, purchased approximately 7 years ago, which developed a problem yesterday. There is a solid black rectangle (approx. 12" wide x 5" high) blocking the bottom part of the screen. The rectangle disappears when you turn the television off and then back on again and when you change the channels, but appears again after about 30 seconds. Any ideas?

had the same problem. black box disappeared when channel was changed or when turned off/on, then reappeared after 10-20 seconds. box didn't show up w/ PS2 or dvd on. turned the closed captioning off, solved problem.

Same problem started today with unit purchased 14 months ago. Try toggling the "Closed Caption" or Skip buttons on Toshiba's controller. In our case, the Big Black Square appeared only on some channels and then for good until we used the closed caption button.

(PS. As you gave a specific measurement I assume the box does not extend to the edge of the screen.)

If the box extends to the full width of the screen, especially if there is any foldover of the picture or the box is bright on the top edge of the box, then you may be lucky and have a frame fault. (Lucky as it would probably a cheaper repair).

RGB processing problem for on-screen menu display, or teletext subtitle display it seems. Or faulty microprocessor.
Disconnect any external RGB inputs, just to rule them out.
