Can get the tv to turn on...the red standby light comes on with no picture but must keep hitting the on button until picture appears.

Take the tv to a repair shop before you blow out the power supply mosfet choppers and make your repair bill much larger.
You are really putting a strain on the supply by repeatedly pushing the power button. The only thing to destroy it faster would be a hammer.
