Sounds like a known fault with the A70 among (many) other cameras. See http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=image-phenomena_notice for more info. You'll be pleased to know that this may be fixed at no cost to yourself. If you contact your nearest Canon Service Centre and describe the fault to them, they can give you an idea whether or not it is covered by this. I have had one repaired and am about to send a second one for a similar repair. All postage costs should be covered by Canon, if this is the cause of your fault.
