Tracy you don't say if your scanner is connected your computer via a Serial Cable (printer cable) or via USB. First try uninstalling the device completely.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click on the System Icon to open System Properties.
Select the Hardware Tab and press the Device Manager Button.
Find your scanner in the list shown. (Expand the device groups as necessary.)
Right-click on the entry for your scanner and select Uninstall.
Once the device has been uninstalled reboot your PC.
There is a good chance that, as your PC starts, it will find a "new device" and install it properly.
If this doesn't work, you should check if you need a new driver. To upgrade the driver, follow the same steps as for uninstalling it, but instead of selecting the Uninstall option select Update Driver.
