PC start up problems (Windows XP)?

When switched on, the PC states there are problems with files on D drive, even though there is no D drive, and goes through a check routine for about 5 mins.
The system is Windows XP Home Edition.
Any ideas please on how to cancel this routine?
thanks

It could be you have a USB pen drive plugged into your machine as windows recognizes it as a drive. If so try removing the drive and see if you still get the same problem.
