How can I finalize a dvd-r that was not finalized originally? The recording was done on a Panasonic dvd recorder DMR-E85 which is now garbage (because Panasonic stopped this model) and they can't repair it. Can I play the (un-finalized) discs on another dvd recorder?

You could try but it really needs finalising. Try to find someone with a Panasonic or if your PC has a DVD burner look around the web for software that can recover an unfinalised DVD.
