Personally i would advise against upgrading your OS once never mind twice!

98 and XP are vastly different OS and are even designed to run on different File Systems.

Personally i would use the backup/migration wizard in Xp to backup my 98 documents and do a clean install.

I work in IT Support and well i would not recommend anyone to upgrade the way your thinking.

Getting back to the question you can go to TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS - VIEW and deselect "hide known file extensions" this will allow you to rename the extensions on your files to whatever you want. What concerns me is you have to do this at all!! If your going to have to manually edit file names and extensions your asking for trouble.

One other consideration.. Upgrades are harder on PC resources than a clean install.. so if your machine is showing its age upgrading it would only make it worse.. espically if its a 98 class machine.
