How to raise the bobbin thread on my Singer Style Mate 347?

I just received my Grandmother's Singer Style Mate 347 sewing machine. It was working just fine until the bobbin ran out of thread. I have the manual and followed the directions to add more thread to the bobbin. Once I replaced the bobbin everything seems slightly out of wack. I can't raise the bobbin thread, the needle hit the plate and had to be replaced. I replaced the needle and threaded the machine, but nothing seems to work. I checked the uppper tension, it's set on 5. I've tried different bobbins, but not luck. What am I doing wrong? How do I raise the bobbin thread.

Hello Julie,
Nice machine that 347, first of all have you put the needle in the right way round, flat side to the back? if you have the open the slide plate to make sure the raceway is moving round, check this by turning the balance wheel towards you,if the hook still does not pick up the thread then the chances are you will need the machine retiming either at a shop or I can type up full instruction for you on how to do it, try the above first of all and if you need the instructions just e-mail me drivewithken@blueyonder.co.uk
