How Can I Fix My IBM Thinkpad 600e?

Lent My Laptop To Daughter at University it wont boot due to requiring a password at start of boot. Shows error codes 161 & 163 which mean time and date need setting but cannot set due to not knowing passwrd. HELP!

Maybe you've discovered it by now. But, there is a way to bypass and reset the password. The IBM (Lenovo) service manual for the 600 tells you how.

You may or may not be stymied here depending on the level of the password. I suppose my first question is why don't you don't get the password off the person who set it?

Those error codes usually mean the the CMOS backup battery need replacing. As to how to, I suggest that If you go to www.lenovo.com (Lenovo own all of IBM's PC assets now) you can download a maintenance manual. Step through the diagnostics in the manual.
