can I extend existing lighting cable?

I need to cinsiderably raise the false ceiling in my bathroom. Unfortunately the previous owner has cut corners when wiring and there isn't enough length of lighting cable above the ceiling for this to be possible. can I extend the existing wires or use a junction box or will they have to be replaced with longer cable?

No reason why you can't use a junction box - but try not to bury it in the wall...ensure cable runs are vertical or horizontal too.
