4 connector light fitting but only 2 wires?

I have a 1950's house in NZ and the light fitting (holding the bulb) needs replacing. There is only a black and red wire and I can only find new fittings with 4 connectors. How should I wire it up and is it safe??

Hi Hollie

This is correct. Conventional lighting has 4 groups of wires

a) Live in, Live out, Live to switch
b) Neutral in, Neutral out
c) Switch Live (the return from the switch)
d) earth

You have not got conventional wiring but this is not a problem you have

b) Neutral in
c) Switch Live

You should have some wires on the light fitting (maybe brown, blue and green) connect black to blue and red to brown
