What is causing the noise during spin cycle of my hoover ca231?

I have a Hoover CA231 Washing Machine and it started making a noise during the spin cycle. The noise comes from the drum area and I noticed some smoke after a wash.

Some smoke coming from the motor is bad news, I'm afraid - expect it to fail completely soon if the smoke is coming from there.
