I would like to know if it's possible to disassemble the crank case for the patio umbrella, and replace the broken cord that opens up the umbrella. Is there a specific size and quality of cord that is used in this instance.?

Go to Youtube.com and type in "patio umbrella repair" in the search area. Patio Furniture Rehab just posted a video on there for replacing a broken cord. It is a 2-part video, and very long and drawn out, but I think it will help you. You can probably get some cord at your local hardware store instead of ordering a piece from Patio Rehab. My cord just broke on Sunday, but fortunately Lowes found me a replacement umbrella.

It looks like we are going to have a landfill problem with these umbrellas. Mine broke also and cannot find any answers on how to fix it.

I guess you can drill a hole in the shaft and put a pin in it and keep it open.
