Is there any way I can check my CD Rewriter is working?

Every time I try to burn songs from my library, it starts with, Ready to burn, Converting, Converted, Burning to CD Closeing, then when it gets to 95% it stops and I get this message on the screen:- Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank disc. I have tried both piece of advice but the same message still comes up on my screen. My CD rewriter has hardly been used. Many thanks for any advice.

Many Thanks Uesquebeathus,
The error code I got was COOD11AB I went on the website you put in your answer but it said about the disc being clean & not damaged an a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank disc. I have tried 3 different types of blank disc, I slowed the recordind speed down to 8x but it still not working. I also get this message:- Insert a blank CD-R or blank CD-RW in CD Drive (E) and then try again.
But I have put a blank disc in the CD Drive (E). This is what's making me think there is something wrong with my Rewriter.
Kind Regards, Andy

in the message that happens there should be an error code, note this and then got to the following website

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/errors.aspx

check the error code against the 99 errors listed at the bottom.
errors like this can be caused by data protection built into the song/music, a dirty trick dreamed up by greedy pop singers and lousy bands who want paid for there work.
