I was doing some DIY today and accidentally caused a hole in my loft's pitched roof roofing felt about 1" diameter. I have lined underneath it from inside the loft with duct tape and intend applying bitumen paint to act as a sealant. Is there an alternative way to mend it and prevent the hole from getting bigger

ideally you would want to repair it from the outside. try what you had in mind and then check it after a heavy rainfall. if its ok leave it. if not seek professional advice from your local roofer. he shouldnt charge you for advice
