Is it possible to repair the soft touch keys on a handheld keyboard?

Is it possible to repair the soft touch keys on a handheld keyboard such as an electronic dictionary? The conducting rubber keys which make a contact on the PCB become unreliable after a time. It seems that the surface of the key deteriorates in some way and needs rejuvinating.
