Handset won't control Phillips VR686 VCR?

Phillips VCR handset controls TV ok but will not control VCR. Thought of checking I-R receiving diode in VCR. Have not been able to find circuit diagram on net, could it be some other problem?

There is no point going to all this trouble when you can get a replacment which controls both for less then £20. I think there are some replacement remotes avalible at www.argos.co.uk (Argos)
