it does have an earth wire - and i know where the red and black go - it's just this extra red... i wired it with the other red and the light works - but wont switch off... does the single red have to be terminated?

If your existing lighting circuit does not contain an earth you should NOT be using that fitting.

Second the switched live should be a black wire with a red sleeve.

I suggest that you get an electrician before you cause a fire - or worse!

Switched live.
In the live terminal of the light fitting.
The two red wires twisted together go in terminal block separately.
