why wont my wall sockets work?

We had 2 sockets go out the other day on one wall and now part of another stopped working. The bottome of the socket is working but not the top. What can I do?

Hi Clint , all sockets in a house hold must by law be on what we call a ring main , hence mains coming from the fuse box to each socket in turn and then return back to the fuse box , therefor if you have two sockets on a wall , one on the left and one on the right, if the wire between the two sockets break , they will both still work , if there is only a single cable then the socket on the right will not work

If there is only one set of connections on the back the socket is faulty and will need replacing.
